Cacao Ceremony for Two · Pure cacao and Awajún ceramics

A set for sharing cacao the way it has been shared for generations in the Amazon: calmly, with intention and in good company.

It brings together our Everyday Cacao, made from 100% pure cacao paste from the Peruvian Amazon, with two ceramic cups painted by hand by Awajún potters from the district of El Cenepa, Amazonas region. With their origin, the meaning of their designs and their ancestral craftsmanship, these cups are ideal companions for a cacao ceremony. Each one carries a different design with its own meaning within the Awajún tradition.

About the cups

The artisans shape each piece from clay mixed with ash and with natural engobes, decorate it by hand with hair brushes they make themselves and, after firing over an open fire, seal it with yukaip resin for waterproofing and shine. Thanks to the ash, the cups are surprisingly light, almost like wood, and at the same time sturdy. With this set you support the work of Indigenous women artisans and their community.

Awajún designs, called chachamamu, are geometric reinterpretations of the forest, inspired by mountains, stars, water drops, plants and animals. In 2021, UNESCO recognized the knowledge and practices of Awajún pottery as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Preparing the cacao

For each cup, heat 1 tablespoon of cacao with about 100 ml (3.4 fl oz) of water, milk or your favorite plant-based drink. Stir gently over low to medium heat until creamy. Sweeten to taste, if you like.

Caring for the cups: suitable for hot drinks such as cacao. Hand wash with warm water and a soft cloth. Not dishwasher or microwave safe.
